As you know I've been trying to declutter my life, both literally and metaphorically, in the last few months. Moving house twice within a year has been a significant help. Faced with the huge amount of stuff we have, I have found my bins, hard rubbish collections and my local charity shops to be by new best friends.
Once we moved into our current home, it didn't take me very long to unpack, as we finally had enough space for all the stuff. Well, except for one room in the house. My room. My work room.
It is an office, study, studio, retreat all rolled into one. Or rather it's meant to be.
This is what it looked like about three months ago.
I promised myself I would get it all sorted out before Christmas. And yet, this is what it looks like now:
Yes, it is a significant improvement, but what you can't see in the photos are the stacks and piles of paper on the floor, that I simply don't know what to do with. I just don't have the right kind of storage.
Being an IKEA addict from way back, (in fact there are some IKEA pieces in my house that are around thirty years old!), I recently bought this unit to organise the kids' art and craft suff:
Now, all I need are some IKEA fairies to come and do to my work room, what they did to this study. (Check it out! You'll want your very own IKEA fairies.... )

My shame room? Hmmm...haven't got one but I do have a shame zone - my desk. My in-tray is getting higher & higher, no matter how much I get rid of or out away, more stuff seems to get put on it. Need to head on to Ikea to find more solutions.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah. It's the office. And it's not just a shame, it's a CRYING shame. Our whole house looks like the hoarders moved in and took over, but the office is by far far far the worst.
ReplyDeleteThe entire house is a shame room. There is a patina of dusty black cat fur on everything. There are many, many Leaning Towers of Books. There are piles of papers, which pretend to be organised since they have been plonked into folders. The filing cabinets groan. The bookcases are stacked at least two deep. There are many, many more kitchen gadgets that we need. I keep promising to make a start. I keep lying to myself.
ReplyDeleteMake friends with your recycling bin. I still had boxes of paper from my public service days. 15 years’ worth!!
ReplyDeleteAnd don’t get me started on books! Need/want to sell them all. Library another best friend. I’ve learnt to say to myself – “You can’t take it with you when you die!”
Oh dear… I hope you get some help soon. Do you need an intervention? Can Dr Phil help? Or Peter Walsh?
ReplyDeleteIf I can ever get my husband onboard, we might survive. Otherwise, just send in a search party in a few months...
ReplyDeleteOh I love Ikea - so wish that they would do our Motorhome for storage solutions!! We don't have an office anymore, but the one shame "cupboard" is our filing cupboard! I have heaps of paperwork and I need to file it but I hate doing the job :)
ReplyDeleteOff to check out your IKEA link!
Cheers
Lisa
Every room in our house needs another big once over. Its not that long ago since we had a skip bin here and its all back again!!!
ReplyDeleteI want to do a big makeover for Joel's study. Not that he has that much stuff. It's tidy. But I want to turn it into a retreat for him. (We call it the mancave). He doesn't spend that much time in it, he's usually hanging out with us. But I want a room with a sofa, somewhere to sit while he plays his bass (with a freaking music sheet holder - they are EVERYWHERE!!!!), posters and maps on the wall (he has a thing for maps), shelving etc.
